Another UI mockup (updated)
October 22, 2008
Based on Laurion’s suggestions in the last post, here’s another mockup:
(Plaese pardon my poor cut-and-paste job on the room numbers…)
UPDATE: And, based on my coworker Keith’s suggestions, another one:

I like the boy/girl icons for the waitlist. The new extra icon (from Keith?)… that must represent neutral? What is it? It looks like one of the bad guy polygon tanks from Tron.
It actually doesn’t represent neutral; it’s a velvet rope that they’re waiting behind (to get into the game). It’s poorly drawn by yours truly, so I’m not surprised you couldn’t figure out what it meant.
Hm. I prefer it with the numbers. Maybe I’m weird.
Yeah, I’d prefer it with numbers. My main problem with the first design was that I couldn’t tell what the numbers represented. Maybe if you put a male/female/neutral (either a star or ⚧) next to it…
Murr. I’m not sure a WP comment thread is conducive to a group discussion. I’d like to ask Josh and Matthew what they like about the numbers. ‘Prefer’ is a good opinion, but a not very helpful debate point.
My honest belief is that most people look at the calendar for two things: what games are when (what games conflict), and what games are open. I feel that if people need more precise numbers, it makes sense for them to click on the game and go to the expanded information, just as if they felt the need to see who the GMs were, or what the game blurb was.
I agree, but I couldn’t really think of a better easily-available option. If you’ve got a better idea, I’ll happily move this discussion over there.
Yeah, exactly right IMO.
Ok, the velvet rope makes more sense… neutral waitlist icons are silly, now that I think about it, and almost nonsensical.
But I can see the point; without something there, people may not know what the icons represent. I’m not sure the velvet rope effectively communicates that either. No matter what solution, you might need a key.
Here’s a thought though. Could you have the signup bars ‘overflow’ the box to the right, to show that more people of that gender signed up than the game can take?
Actually not true – in the case of a game with only neutral slots, I don’t want to have ProCon show the genders of the players publicly at all. The GMs will still get to see those, but since this is a system I want to have applicability outside the LARP world, showing genders for gender-neutral events seems like a big no-no. So in that case, I’d show a neutral-gendered waitlist too.
That’s an interesting thought. But how big should we let the box get? Maybe it could scale to fit the available data?
